While travelling around Christmas time is typically overpriced and busy, we can all admit that seeing everyone with their tans on the beach while we struggle to scrape the ice off of our windshields is not the ideal scenario. Whatever the reason may be, if you’re working, relaxing at home or even doing a mini stay-cation somewhere in Canada, we’ve put together a few ways you can pretend like you’re going away to a hot climate for the holidays.

1. Movies and music

Spanish music always gets us feeling like we are laying on a beach carefree, similar to how watching a good movie that takes place in a hot climate makes us feel like we’re actually there. Remember that if you have a busy holiday season at home, take the time to relax and do the things that make you happy. For us thats obviously a fake-cation!

Spotify and Apple music both have great playlists for this exact occasion (a personal favourite is “Bahamas Vacations” on Apple Music.)

An example of a movie is Just Go with it (trailer linked), which is a great family classic that gives us serous stay-cation vibes. If you’re a thrill seeker, the movie Jaws will effectively remind you of why you didn’t go away in the first place!

2. Spa Day

Treat yourself! Plan a spa day for you and a friend/significant other and spend the day pretending you’re at a resort spa! If a big spa day is too time consuming or simply not your cup of tea, taking even half an hour out of your day to run a bath and put on a face mask will feel relaxing and therapeutic after a busy week. Taking care of yourself is so important and feeling good will often increase overall productivity in other aspects of your life!

3. Get Ahead!

If you’re the type of person that likes to get things done ahead of time, the end of December is a great time to do so and lighten your work for January! Will this be boring? Maybe. But will you feel happy when everyone else is working on it and you’ll have already done it? Definitely. If you don’t have work to complete, reflect on things that you’ve always wanted to do and never had the time for, and find time during this period!

This is how to make a Bahama Mama. Need we say more?

5. Plan at Least One Thing to Look Forward to

Sports? Concert? A visit to the Christmas market? Dinner with an old friend? Having things to look forward to is what keeps us going and makes us feel excited for the future. And if you’re truly a master of the fake-cation, you’ll incorporate some of our tricks to feel like you’re at a tropical destination into these activities. Who doesn’t love a fruity drink with dinner?

6. Enjoy The Benefits of Being at Home

This article is obviously written by someone who loves a tropical getaway at this time of year, but there are many perks of being at home! Like we mentioned before, getting ahead or caught up on work or even TV shows is something you cannot do with the terrible WI-FI at most resorts! Also, snow is pretty! It’s so difficult to get a big group out on vacation together, so being home with family and friends is not something you can experience while living at a hotel with complete strangers. Finally, do you know how many Christmas movies are on at this time of year? Ya. A lot.

If you are one of the lucky ones going away over the holidays… we wish you a safe and amazing trip! For all those sticking around here with us, we hope you’ll enjoy our tips!
